bali, the land of gods
Balinese are mostly hindus, and therefore the island is full of hindu temples.
According to our guide, Hindus will collect money to build their temples. A few household will have a family temple, and they will build a 'neighbourhood' temple or even a larger temple for the whole city. The temples have a unique design and contain many gods statues made of stone which the island has plenty of them.
They produce batik, wood furniture,stone statues(export to india, china and silver ware.Walk along the streets at evening and you can see the offerings of Hindus to their gods. They will place some flowers and spices?? and even sweets onto a paper box and light the incense and put it on the floor.
There are active volcanoes on the island. Mount batur is one of them and recently it just erupted. Not from the top though, the eruption occurs from the bottom and killed off many fishes in the lake beside the volcano. However, despite the threat, you can find many villages beside the mountain. The air is fresh and the weather is cool. The soil is very fertile and no fertilizer is needed. Paddy fields, orange plantation, cabbages line the roads. A nice sight to see.
The special coffee of the bali island is the luwak coffee. The animal that looks like the cat luwak will eat coffee beans. The coffee beans are fermented in its body and then passed out in its poo. The beans in the poo is collected, washed and grind into luwak coffee. Dare to try?? They also have lemongrass drink, lemon tea and bali ginseng coffee.
For a driver, their average pay is about 200 to 300 singapore dollars. It is hard to make a living after the bali bombings. Before the bombings, they have a better life and making money is easier. However, the bombings have affected the tourism.
Shops are pretty empty but restaurants are very crowded though. Especially those at seminyak. Most of the bosses are foreigners from europe or America. They hire locals as the cook or waiters. The pizza is so delicious and very authentic italian. I even saw the italian boss ( a female) serving the food for us. The service is good. At another cafe, the boss personally asked all diners if the food is up to expectations. Something that you never encounter in Singapore. The bosses also serve the food, clean the tables and usher the guests. Such service is lacking here. the price is reasonable considering the ambience is more upmarket style, average about $10-13 per person with main course , desserts and drinks. In singapore, just a main course is already more than $13.
The downside of bali is there are too many tourist at the tourist attractions. It is best to go the to places off the beaten track.
